Both concentric and eccentric expansion joints are used to absorb thermal expansion and contraction in piping systems. However, the key difference between them is the location of the centerline. In a concentric expansion joint, the centerline of the two ends is aligned, while in an eccentric expansion joint, the centerline of the two ends is offset. This means that eccentric expansion joints are used when there is a need to accommodate movement in a single direction.
