At elevated temperatures, all metals react with hot gases. The most common high-temperature gas mixture is air, of which oxygen is the most reactive component. To prevent corrosion in air, this Stainless Steel ER-318 Filler Wires is limited to about 480 Degree C (900 Degree F). The oxidation resistance in stainless steels increases with the addition of chromium, silicon and aluminium.

Small additions of cerium and yttrium increase the adhesion of the oxide layer on the surface. The addition of chromium remains the most common method of increasing high-temperature corrosion resistance in Alloy ER-318 Filler Wires. Chromium reacts with oxygen to form a chromium oxide layer that reduces oxygen diffusion into the material. The minimum 10.5 percentage of chromium in stainless steels provides strength to about 700 Degree C (1,300 Degree F), while 16 percentage of chromium provides strength to about 1,200 Degree C (2,200 Degree F).

Other gases such as sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide and chlorine also attack Stainless Steel UNS S31800 Welding Wires. The resistance to other gases depends on the type of gas, the temperature and the alloy content of the stainless steel.
